Over 30 years ago my uncle gave me a ride back to the University of Guelph in his old station wagon after a weekend at home. What a treat to get a direct ride instead of taking transit and waiting in the cold and spending double or triple the time! The trade off? Well, Uncle was often speaking of esoteric topics and quite frankly, I avoided conversations with him. We were at different stages of life. I remember he lectured about how we cannot change the external world around us and so our only option is to recreate our inner world in order to have peace or happiness or whatever one’s ultimate goal is. I had no idea what he was talking about! Now, decades later, I’m realizing we really do only have control of our inner worlds and can change our perspective by reframing and choosing our lens as Michelle Obama puts it. This is how to truly experience a shift in our lives. I can feel Uncle smiling down upon me now. And doesn’t the Toronto waterfront look completely different from the water?
