A Puffball Story

We were hiking with the dogs and in the middle of the path we came across this mushroom on display looking as if someone glued on hundreds of little gemstones. We stopped to admire it…at first. I don’t actually know about mushrooms but my brain saw this one and quickly fabricated story and involved the senses. I decided it must be spongy and smell earthy and the little shiny jewels would be so delicate to touch. It would taste, well, like a mushroom!

What if my brain made this story…oh it looks dangerous and the pointy gem stones are like thorns. It’s toxic…pretty to look at but don’t taste and even touch it. Now I’m scared and unknowingly steer the dog away from it.

There are facts and then there is my story. I wasn’t actually afraid of this little mushroom until I made this vivid narrative around it. What are you afraid of? And does the fear come from the facts, or from your story?
